Community activities

The Or Chalom Jewish Massorti Community of Aix en Provence also works to support other organisations in Aix.  We collect for local homeless groups, we also join in annual International Mitzvah Day – doing deeds such as painting refuges, cleaning the local river banks and parks, supporting the Camp des Milles Memorial Museum.  This gives us a presence in the city as well as allowing us to carry out ‘tikkun olam’ – healing the world by social action.

Mitzvah Day

Mitzvah Day is an international initiative based on the belief that we can all make a contribution to the society in which we live through collective action. We devote one day of the year to join the fight against poverty, protecting the environment or simply a day of solidarity and sharing. Mitzvah means “good deed” in Hebrew. During the day volunteers give their time and lend their support to the efforts of organizations that operate with communities in need. Mitzvah Day is open to all, regardless of affiliation, level of religiosity, social status, age, sex or nationality.

Mitzvah Day aims to:

  • Educate participants in volunteering and social action,
  • Support the work of organizations addressing the needs of people in Aix-en-Provence,
  • Create an opportunity to meet volunteers from different backgrounds.

Examples of our work:

  • Educational support in schools
  • Painting in a community centre in Jas de Bouffan
  • Creating and cataloguing a library
  • Cleaning of the Arc River’s banks
  • Cleaning of the Jewish cemetery of Les Milles
  • Preparing lunches for volunteers and for people in need
